This painting is first and foremost a representation of being a transgender person. The experience of being born into the wrong body and the journey of finding your way back to yourself. Creating a body that is your home over time, changing and readjusting as your inner world does.

This painting started as a drawing a few years back, as I was still finding my way as a baby queer in so many ways. I have always known I wanted to make it into a painting but the timing just didn’t work out. That is until the leftover and mismatched player cards from my sister's birthday party in May sparked an idea.

The idea is that both trans women and men are royalty. Our experience of life is unique from so many others, we are focused to grow and forge our own way in a world that ruthlessly tries to shut us down. We are the king and queen of following our hearts…

The layers of the painting are built of a number of letters to my younger self. Messages I wish I could tell 10-year-old me. Mistakes yet to be made and loving messages that would have meant to hear at the time.

In the signature Kacie Kulture style my painting mimics humans; being one background of controlled chaos from afar, well the layers that make it one of a kind become clearer the closer you come.

Now to drive into the graphic :)

In the painting, you see both a trans man and women have masks in front of them that are crying. This represents the body that they were born into that never fit right. It represents the body that felt like a prison.

Underneath you see a happy, healthy, and thriving trans royalty. Showing that we don't deserve merely just to exist we derive to thrive, we deserve happiness, trans kids deserve to play sports, we DESERVE TO EXPERIENCE LIFE TO THE FULLEST….the same as you.

In particular black trans women have led our movement of pride and sadly are also the ones to face the most violence for being who they are. With that being said I wanted to intention and very respectfully find a way to pay respect. With a closer look, it is apparent that the woman in this painting is a black trans queen shown through their hairstyle and facial features. I did this as my trans sister of color deserves the world and more, and I wanted to take the platform this painting creates to pay respect to the women who have done so much for our community but heartbreakingly also face the most violence. The trans man is a direct reflection of myself as I play around more with using myself as references in my art and this was the prime painting to do so.

This painting stands to show the kings and queens that trans people are as they find the powerful and euphoria of creating who they are in this world. No matter what this world throws at us, we will always shine our light, I promise you that.

And last but not least, to my baby trans homies… I promise you Niranava awaits.
