This painting is all about embracing the things that make your soul feel alive. We all have a light with in us, we have things that bring a smile to our face and when we are pursuing them we light up, when we follow the path that aligns with that light life feels better.
Lately I have loved using traditional tattooing as inspiration for the style in which I create my designs, through the piece you will see a lot of homage to tattoos and their inspiration to me both as a painter and a tattoo artist.
Life doesn’t always feel as straight forward as just following the things that bring us joy. There is always outside noise that can be suffocating especially when you are apart of there energy for to long. Pressure to succeed, hustle culture, the idea of taking a safe job over one you are passionate about, negative people, and draining situations. All these things can drain our energy instead of ignite our fire. It can feel at times impossible to follow a path that resonates with your heart and your genius zone.
In this life we have our hearts and our brain to figure out how to move forward. Some where in time I feel like we got mixed up on what one to follow. Logic is thought of the “smart” way to move forward well following your heart is thought of as being naive. But I think as a society we have it wrong, we were given our hearts to follow the things that make us feel like we are alive not just existing. We were given our hearts to find passion, joy, and love and our brains are there to figure out how to follow our passions daily.
Don’t get this mistaken with toxic positivity, life is hard, heartache and break is real and that heart that brings all the good things is also what allows us to feel all the emotions that can make us sick to our stomachs in pain. Both are needed though, for better or worse feeling the highs are worth feeling the lows because loneliness is a lousy insurance for not putting yourself out there.
This painting is about finding your light through all the darkness that is apart of life. Bats symbolically are known to ward off negative energy, snakes are symbols for transitioning for the better, and moths are know for follow the light but also know symbolically as a sign of transformation as well. By taking these animals and insects that are normally perceived as “bad” and using them to symbolize protection and transformation to follow the good in life shown as the candle in the centre of this painting it creates the perfect metaphor for holding space for the darkness in life but allowing our focus to stay on finding the light that makes us feel alive.
In signature Kacie Kulture style the background is built up using abstract layers embracing all that is purposely imperfect and the balance of the controlled chaos which is life. Unlike my other paintings there is not writing within the layers but instead I experimented with symbols. With a closer look it is easy to see the flower of life appear through the layers of this painting and similar scared geometry.
I always love diving into the meanings of my paintings as I utilize symbolism in everything I create. With that being said the thought I’d like to leave you with at the end of explaining it all is that there is no safe bets in life, so follow your heart and your intuition passionately every chance you get. Put more energy into believing that the universe is working with you then against you.
